Sustainability and Environment

The priority at Hornett Bros & Co Ltd is to limit any adverse environmental effects whilst striving to maximise our efficiency for the supply of our products. To that end significant financial investment has already been input into the plant to reduce our resource usage. Our electrical supply is obtained from 100% renewable sources; the onsite steam to power our processes is produced from a new, more efficient, industrial boiler, with more of the generated condensate being retained within the system.

Each aspect of the running of the business has been assessed for the resultant impacts; so that, where possible, additional controls can be targeted. These can be as basic as additional monitoring or extend to large scale CAPEX projects, such as the planned improvement on the steam and cooling water supply, and condensate removal, to our reactors which will result in improved utilisation of the generated steam.

The raw materials for our products have been regularly increasing in price so minimising losses from waste makes business as well as environmental sense. We have firm processes in place to be able to rework and reuse batch remainders turning potential waste into good stock. We only use primary packaging that might be cleaned and reused, and the majority of our raw materials and finished products are received or despatched within units that have already been through this process.

Our site operates under an environmental permit issued by the UK Environment Agency and requires the measurement and control of many potentially adverse environmental effects. This is reviewed on a regular basis by an Environment Agency inspector, along with the provision of suitable data demonstrating our compliance with the permit.
